In this unit students will:
1) Identify what every child needs to grow well during the first five years of life.
2) Articulate their memories of being age five.

Unit 1: Where Do We Stand?
In this unit students will:
1) Discuss the importance of development in the first five years of life;
2) Define child survival and the under-five mortality rate — what it means, and how it is calculated;
3) Become aware of the reasons why the under-five mortality rate is an indicator of a country’s well-being;
4) Compare and contrast the under-five mortality rates of various geographic regions;
5) Appreciate the reasons for differences in child survival rates;
6) Read and interpret tables, graphs, pie charts, and maps.

Martin Bell reports: At Spin Boldak in Kandahar province, all children under five are immunized against polio by an Afghan team on one side of the border working in tandem with a Pakistani team on the other. The crossing is open for 12 hours a day. About 8,000 people use it every day, and 800 of the youngest children receive the vaccine.
