Connecting Classrooms

Connecting Classrooms is a free educational program designed to link classrooms around the world. It’s currently being piloted in the United States and seven countries in Africa (Ghana, Kenya, Liberia, Madagascar, Rwanda, Senegal and Uganda). Participating students engage in active dialogue around topics of shared global concern such as access to health care and common misconceptions of their communities. Discussions unfold via an innovative online platform which promotes group interaction and collaborative work in a cross-cultural environment. Activities are developed jointly with partners and teachers, taking full advantage of existing curricula and learning resources.

In the fall of 2011, TeachUNICEF and UNICEF brought this initiative to Harry S Truman High School in the Bronx and Ramapo High School in New Jersey. Through UNICEF’s Connecting Classrooms, students are empowered and encouraged to voice their opinions about the issues that are important to them. From conversations around climate change to access to education in under resourced communities, students discover common contexts between themselves in ways they never could have imagined.
